So I just lost a couple of bottles of red wines, luckily not the more vintage bottles. No, it wasn’t stolen, and I can’t blame anyone for what happened as we all did prefer to forget about any bottle put into storage until the time comes when we either feel like drinking it or show it off. The wooden rack that we used to store some of the bottles collapsed and destroyed most of the bottles being stored in them. Apparently, there was a significant amount of termite damage on the thing; it was unavoidable.
Upon the investigation of Pest Control Company Yucaipa, the damage seemed to be inactive, meaning the damage was done long before the wine rack was added in the area. The termites that did this was already killed by time; we had purchased the antique rack from an estate sale upcountry some time ago, it looked sturdy for its age, so we purchased it. Unfortunately for us, after a good amount of bottles were stored in them, the combined weight and time was enough to make the weak points give in.
The bottles lost were not very expensive, but they would have been great vintages had they’ve been given time. Lesson learned I guess, check everything! I’ve had had carpenters and pest control companies check out the remaining racks to make sure no more casualties occurs. I recommend anyone with old storage racks and cellars to do the same; if you don’t, it could be a costly mistake.
